Is everyone ok with rakes at home games? I intened to start having cash games at my house and the minimun buy in with be . I will provide food and drinks. So is 5% rake ok? I have a good 15 people commited to my tournament games so ..

In most if not all states raking’ the pot is illegal. It is certanly fair for your guests to chip in for food and drink, so you are much better off and safer to just ask them for donations before the game starts, or before you go shopping . Not that you are likely to get caught, but just in the unlikely event that some one blows the whistle on you your ass is covered.

It depends on where you live. Most parts of America consider that illegal gambling. The moment you start taking a rake, they have a problem. You’d be better off simply telling your friends to bring their own food and drinks.

5% may be a bit much. Remember a rake is the amount the house gets from every hand.
Also as others have mentioned, it may illegal in your state to do so. Check your state laws to be sure.
Raking a small amount (or charging a small fee) to cover expenses is acceptable. Raking for profit is running a con-game on the people who are playing at your house. This is especially unacceptable if you are running a game with a small buy-in (such as $40).
Why dont’ you just forget the rake and have everybody bring in an extra $10 for food and drinks? That’s what we do.
3% is a normal casino rake.
It is illegal but if it is just a friendly game with people you know then i don’t see any trouble, its just when you have a guest who is not your friend and he loses or just gets upset for some reason then you might have an issue with the police. Most games take 10% on their games so 5% is not that bad for the rake. Just make sure you are raking the pots for the correct amount.
Once there is rake, it isn’t a home game. It’s an underground card club or poker room. Now, you may want to leave out a bowl for donations for refreshments, but personally, I don’t play in raked home games. I will, however, gladly contribute money for food/drink. It’s all in how you term it. If you are doing this to make money, though, it is definitely illegal.
